This amazing 29.6 carat blue diamond was found by Petra Diamonds at its Cullinane mine in South Africa, 25 miles north east of Pretoria. This is one of the most exceptional diamonds ever found at this mine.
This is not the first blue diamond found by this mine. In 2013 they found a 25.5 carat blue diamond which sold for $17m back in 2013. I’m sure this latest discovery will sell for a similar price (probably higher)
The diamond is a stunning vivid blue with excellent clarity which is exceptionally rare for a stone this size. After it is cut and polished the stone will more than likely be put up for auction.
Cullinan mine hold the record for selling the most expensive diamond per carat from 2012 when they sold another blue diamond for $10.8m in 2012. The largest gem ever discovered by this mine was back in 1905 and was presented to the British monarch Edward VII – the Royals do like their bling! It was a 3,106 carat stone (yes, this is not a typo) and forms part of the British crown Jewels
For us mere mortals, blue diamonds are available – roughly speaking think the price of a white diamond and multiply by 3 to 5 to be safe.
A few Irish jewellers we deal with on perfectring have sold them in the past, along with red diamonds so it is possible if you had capital wand something truly different.
