Gemstones : Looking at Birthstones – Origins & Meanings

Birthstones come in the form of beautiful, rare gemstones and make for meaningful and beautiful gifts for someone special. Not only are these stones associated with a month, but each stones have their own unique meaning. In this blog, we will take a brief look at each stone and discuss the origins of each. Birthstones can be included on an engagement ring, as a gift on a birthday or a nice idea is to have a ring made of the birthstone of each of your children.

Birthstones ~ Origins & Meanings

January ~ Garnet

It is a stone that symbolises regeneration and energising.  There are many mixed varieties of garnet but they are most commonly a dark red colour. It’s name is derived from the Latin for seed as it quite similar in colour to the pomegranate seed.

February ~ Amethyst

April ~ Diamond

Those born in April are very blessed as their stone is especially  sparkly – the diamond! Diamonds are one of the rarest stones in the world and are definitely ones to treasure. Diamonds are usually the gift of a person in love but they are also a symbol of strength, creativity and imagination.

June ~ Pearl or Alexandrite

Those lucky enough to be born in June are especially lucky to have not one, but two beautiful birthstones. Pearl is said to bring focus and enhance your own, personal integrity. It is also a symbol of faith and loyalty. Alexandrite was first discovered in the 19th century so has less history associated with it. Since its discovery in Russia, the stone is said to bring luck and good fortune to those who have it.

Ruby is a beautiful, vibrant, red stone. If you wear the stone, it is believed to keep you safe but also it is said to bring passion and prosperity into your life. It is also said to bring a heightened sense of self-confidence to the wearer.. I mean, who wouldn’t feel good wearing one of these stunning stones?

August ~ Peridot

This is one of the lesser known stones, but that doesn’t mean it is any less beautiful. This stone emits a vibrant green glow and its formation is one of the most unusual. It is one of only two gems (Diamond is the other) that doesn’t form in the Earth’s crust, but in molten rock of the upper mantle and brought to the surface by the extreme force of volcanoes and earthquakes. It is also one of the few stones that forms in only one colour. It is also associated with having protective powers.

Tourmaline can come in a wide variety of colours such as green, pink, blue, purple and black and it often said to be a ‘magic’ stone and will protect the wearer.

November ~Topaz of Citrine

Topaz can come in a variance of colours but like many stones, it gets its colour from its impurities. If you wear a topaz it is said to bring friendship, love and fidelity to your life. Possessing a citrine stone is said to encourage fresh beginnings and fullness of life. Citrine can come in a range of colours from pale yellow to brown.

December ~ Tanzanite, Turquoise or Zircon

If you’re born in December, you have really won in the birthstone lottery with 3 beautiful stones! All 3 are deep blue in colour but Tanzanite is exceptionally beautiful and rare. This stone is only found in Tanzania and was only discovered in 1967. Turquoise is also a blue stone and is believed to be a stone of healing. Zircon is actually the oldest mineral on earth and is found in the earth’s crust. Zircon is said to bring prosperity if the stone contains yellow or gold colours.
